The legend that inspired this pendant
The serpent Jörmungandr is the offspring of Loki and the giantess Angrboda. According to Norse stories and legends, Jörmungandr is so large that it can envelop the whole world. It coils around Midgard and bites its own tail. Thus, it keeps the seas and oceans under control.
According to the legend, when the time of Ragnarök arrives, the Yggdrasil tree shakes violently. This is one of the signs of the end of the world. The serpent Jörmungandr then awakens and swims towards land to participate in the world's destruction.
This pendant is, therefore, an allegorical representation of the world as the ancient Vikings imagined it.
