In the east, the Vikings founded principalities along the coast of the Baltic Sea. In Ukraine, they founded Kievan Rus. There, the Vikings established a kingdom right in the heart of the Slavic world. However, Slavic culture had a strong influence on the Vikings who settled in the region. The result was the emergence of a powerful kingdom around Novgorod and Kiev, where the customs and beliefs of both peoples intermingled.
